Logo for America [redacted]

We submitted a proposal for Pete’s branding. Didn’t get the work. Probably for the best. Hyperakt did one helluva job. But I still wanted my chance at a presidential logo for 2020. I did get one, and this is how it unfolded.

People seem to care more about political branding these days. Women running are breaking the rules. Graphic design experts are critiquing the Democratic field. Under Consideration is all over that Boot-Edge-Edge brand. From the Obama ‘O’ to the Hillary ‘H,’ politicians investing in their brand has been with us for the last few cycles. But all the buzz and noise and fervor around 2020 makes the branding this time around seem even more important.

Sure, you’re a candidate with a platform and policy ideas, but what’s your logo look like?

The XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX needed an answer to that question. And there I was, ready to answer it. Having cut my teeth in progressive politics and activist campaigns for years, I knew I was ready. I was still, of course, terrified Debbie Millman would call whatever I did an abomination or the peanut section over on “Spotted” would have all their shit to talk. But none of that matters when it comes to the work. I’m a professional designer, I know how to handle an internet of opinions no one ever asked for.

And this is what democracy looks like. More VEEP than West Wing. True, I didn’t get a logo design out there in the 2020 field mixing it up, but at least I got this lousy case study.
