images for a new activism
it’s been a long process in working towards becoming the land of opportunity with freedom and justice for all, and the whole bit. and we have such a long way to go. it’s brick by brick. it’s diy. so pick up your talents and get to it. until your hands hurt. green patriot posters
i want to do work that...
here is my very much work-in-progress, 11-point mini-manifesto on what I want living and working as a designer to mean in these days of uncertainty and opportunity. tmf
placing people above profit
designing change: design as activism sits right in the middle of everything else made to influence people: trying to motivate the caring, turn on the oblivious and battle against those who just don’t give a damn. how magazine
a story of volunteer design
we are a small part of a global movement working on a local level to create a sustainable future. it's the kind of effort that's important enough to bring in talented people who are ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work. design observer
illuminating the issues
those big issues of natural resources, energy, the environment, they can all seem so far away. but a creative and imaginative arts community takes those issues, unexpectedly illuminates their meaning and moves people to get involved and fight to make a difference. hear nebraska
art to end hunger
it’s like those sentences we used to have to write on the chalkboard in school when we did something bad. but this time, we’re doing something good. we’re pledging a better future. over and over and over until it becomes reality. share our strength
an omaha community event
focused on bigger ideas
it’s an omaha shop having the event, omaha artists organized it, an omaha shop printed the posters, it takes place during omaha creative week. that aspect of community was really important to us. now, make (this) better. the reader
less crazy talk. more illumination.
my vision, once america has gone through its great transformation, with it's special ability to enlighten and inspire, graphic design will be used before, during and after exchanges of opposing views on a subject. to inspire full engagement, verify information and dissect further implications of the debate. tmf
in defense of good
what the good design movement is doing is essentially communicating our support of equality, sustainability, fairness and hope. we are stepping out of our comfort zones, looking at what exactly it is we do all day and finding opportunities to build rather than just sell. we know that design should work not only to better itself, but our communities as well – both local and global. adbusters
challenges you encounter as a designer
and how do you deal with them?
coming up with something new, something moving, something relevant. and in the mix of it all, there is the big question: is this authentic? in a world of faked, contrived, staged, hyperbolic, and outright lies, it’s something designers have to continually be asking. it’s not the most glamorous, and it’s hard to do completely, but without that check on ourselves, there’s a good chance we're just creating garbage for the media (and physical) wasteland of the trite and the useless. design feast
good thinking: utilizing design
for the forces of good
look around. find an organization or a group of people that matches your values or your passions, and needs a voice. start in your community and look for ways to volunteer, to lend a hand, to use your skills to make things better where you live right now today. aiga ne: me, myself & design

any advice for people just
entering the profession?
always think. always do. self-doubt is good. make friends. don’t be a jerk. lighten up. do what you can to make this world better. it’s gonna be a strange ride but, dammit, it’ll be worth howling about. ca insights
practical solutions: behold the
sunset community farm csa box
local food resonates here, in this red state called cornhusker, bringing together suburbanites and hipsters around healthy eating. it's revolution in a box with no supermarket in sight -- support local farms and get the freshest, healthiest food. pecha kucha
in the future, how will
we communicate?
locally, globally, and everything in between. with special attention being paid to the micro-local leading to the macro-global. mass movements for change in the future will be about the ideas we can successfully communicate utilizing a vast array of tools and resources with the central focus being a tolerant and engaged public. bmd
